PBA FINALS GAME 5

Yap, Bowles move B-MEG closer to 2nd conference crown

When the game is on the line, expect Big Game James to deliver one hell of a performance for B-MEG in Game Five of the PBA Commissioner's Cup finals.

James Yap had his best shooting night of the series, going 10-of-16 from the field and a perfect 4-of-4 from three-point range, to finish with 30 points, while teaming up with import Denzel Bowles to power B-MEG to an 82-66 win over Talk 'N Text Wednesday night at the Smart Araneta Colisuem.

"It took a tremendous effort for us to win tonight. We gave our absolute all to win tonight," said B-MEG coach Tim Cone, who is hoping to clinch his first title as the Llamados' mentor.

"The pressure is on us to close out the series especially against a great team like Talk 'N Text. Hope we have another effort like that."

B-MEG holds a 3-2 lead in the best-of-seven title series and can clinch the second conference crown with a win on Friday also at the Big Dome.

Cone said Yap's buzzer-beating trey to end the third period gave B-MEG the momentum in the fourth. "It was (Yap) at his best. He played the whole second half tonight."

"It will be up to us to give another effort like what we did tonight. (Yap's three-pointer) gives you a big blast going into the next quarter."

That triple was Yap's 25th point in the game and pushed B-MEG's lead to 59-53.

A Joe Devance three-point play and a Marc Pingris twinner at the start of the final canto had the Llamados enjoying an 11-point spread, 64-53.

Consecutive three-pointers by TNT's Jared Dillinger and Jimmy Alapag sandwiched a Bowles jumper as the defending champion Tropang Texters threatened for the last time, 66-59, with still over eight minutes left in the game.

Yap and Bowles delivered the knockout punches after that, alternately making the baskets in B-MEG's closing 16-7 run to complete the Llamados' win.

A Bowles step back jumper, with three seconds left in the shot clock, gave B-MEG a 70-59 spread midway in the fourth. He kept the Llamados afloat with a three-point play, 78-64, with 2:31 remaining in the game.

But B-MEG did not complete the job on offense alone as Cone's troops clamped down on defense, holding Talk 'N Text to a 36.9 percent field goal shooting (24-of-65).

"We rediscovered our defense and we continued to hold them out in the second half," said Cone. "Great character by Pingris, you can see it in his body tonight. Yancy (De Ocampo) can be a weapon here in this series. JC's (Intal) defense set the tone for us, he did a good job on Dillinger. They were our unsung heroes."

"The pressure is on us to close it out TNT's playing tremendous defense on PJ (Simon) after the first game. Our attention is on Ranidel (De Ocampo), their attention is on (Simon) and he's playing a great decoy," said Cone.

Bowles tallied 28 points, 18 rebounds, one assist two steals and four blocks in another monster game for the reigning Best Import of the conference.

Dillinger and Jason Castro finished with 18 and 16 points each for the Tropang Texters while Donnell Harvey 13 markers, 16 rebounds and five assists. — JVP, GMA News
